Why it’s important to know your body shape.

Have you ever had your body shape be referred to as a ‘Pear’ or an ‘Apple’? I find this concept hard to understand…Why are women being likened to fruit?

We are not fruit. We are women. We have breasts, hips, bottoms, tummies, and thighs. That’s just the way it is and personally I think we should consider ourselves lucky to be so perfectly imperfect. Our bodies are amazing, they can do amazing things. Never compare yourself to fruit.

HOWEVER, it is important to know about your unique body shape and here is why.

It makes getting dressed and going shopping easier. Yep…EASIER! If you know that your hips are wider than your shoulders, or that you are petite with a large bust then that’s the first step in knowing how best to dress your shape.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying your body shape is what matters…I’m saying knowing what type of body shape you have does. One key part of having great style is knowing how to balance your proportions. And guess what…if you know what your proportions are then you can balance them when getting dressed. It’s the difference between looking ‘put together’ and complete to feeling off balance and ‘just not quite right’.

Let me use an example. Mumma’s let’s start with you and those hips you now have courtesy of your little one (perhaps not so little anymore). If you are someone who has hips that are wider than your shoulders, then perfect. Let’s work with that.

“The trick is to make your hips and shoulders balanced and within proportion. Dress to accentuate your shoulder and neckline, while bringing attention to your waist. Never allow a garment to end at the widest part of your hips. Always aim for garments to end above or below the widest part. And dress to create the illusion of length. This makes the eye of the beholder look down and not focus on the one area you feel conscious about.”

This is just one example! There are so many more out there. Because you know what, no one woman is the same as the next. We are all unique, as is our individual body shapes.

If you know your body shape, it goes a long way to understanding how to dress for your proportions (a topic in itself). Then you can shop with purpose. Know what you are looking for. Narrow your selections and reduce the overwhelm of shopping.

But first you must know you shape.
