How to shop your wardrobe.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told – ‘I love what you’re wearing – where did you get it from?’ and I’ve replied – ‘Oh this old thing!? I’ve had this for years’.

Don’t get me wrong, sometimes the clothes I’m wearing are new, but it’s the items I’ve had in my wardrobe for years that I get the most compliments on. They are one off pieces, they fit me fabulously, they sing my personal style. That’s what people notice.

If you have just had a massive wardrobe overhaul and really don’t have much sitting in there, then this might not be for you… BUT if you are like most women out there and have a wardrobe FULL of clothes then it’s time you went shopping.

Turn around, open those cupboard doors again. You’re shopping at home today.

Here are some tips of how to shop with what you already have:

Choose one piece you want to make sing.

Is it a print shirt? Is it a pleat skirt? Is it a high waisted pair of pants that you love? Or is it a fab leather jacket? Whatever it is, one key piece and build your outfit around it. Everyone has basics in your wardrobe that’ll make any outfit work. A white shirt or T-shirt, a black long sleeve top, a pair of white sneakers, a nude heel.

Get style inspiration.

You see a post on Instagram or someone walking down the street and you think, “DAMN … they look gooood”. Before finding out where they bought their pants from, go back to your wardrobe and check you don’t already have something similar that you bought last year and forgot about just sitting there. Waiting. To be worn.

Wear it differently.

Get the most out of what you already have by changing how you wear it. This can help maximise your wardrobe and get the worth out of everything you have. Tuck a shirt a different way, swap out the trench coat for a wool blend coat, add a belt, change your accessories. Don’t be afraid to be creative with clothes as well, it’s fun and it will often bring more interest to your outfit. Wear a dress as a long top over jeans, swap out the tie in a coat for a chic belt, tie a scarf that matches your outfit to your bag. Sometimes the simple things breathe new life to your style.

Rediscover.

When was the last time you took all your clothes out and simply put them back in another order. Maybe it’s time to rediscover. Sort your hanging space by garment colour, or simply put it back to front. You’ll be amazed how a change in routine can help rediscover items you’ve been staring at all along.

Find what’s missing.

The beauty of shopping your wardrobe is that it also helps you realise what is actually missing. If you go to put together an outfit and every time you think: ‘I could really use neutral coloured jumper here instead of all the versions of pink I have’ then you’re probably actually missing something useful.
